New Publication: Nur Hidayati on Harnessing Storytelling for Meaningful Evaluation

27 March 2025

We are excited to share that our colleague Nur Hidayati, together with co-author Wendy Knerr, has recently published an article on the power of storytelling in evaluation, now available in English and Dutch.

In The Most Significant Change (MSC) Technique: Monitoring, Evaluation, and Empowerment through Storytelling, Nur explores how MSC offers a participatory, story-based approach to capturing complex, meaningful change. Unlike traditional evaluation methods that focus on indicators and numbers, MSC centers on the lived experiences of stakeholders, giving voice to unexpected outcomes, subtle shifts, and transformative processes.

The article also shows how MSC fosters inclusivity by ensuring that the perspectives of marginalized and minority groups are heard and valued. By combining storytelling with structured analysis and stakeholder dialogue, MSC becomes a powerful tool for learning, reflection, and decision-making.

Through practical examples and a clear step-by-step explanation, this piece is an invaluable resource for evaluators, program implementers, and policymakers looking to make their work more inclusive, dynamic, and responsive to real-world change.

Today , we celebrate Human Rights Day – the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

ResultsinHealth actively works to contribute to the recognition and realization of these rights. Our key areas of expertise include Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights, Gender Equality, and Social Inclusion.

By implementing participatory methods, we include program beneficiaries in our activities in an active and meaningful manner. Such methods are particularly valuable when working with vulnerable groups, people whose rights are not ‘a given’, but disrespected, or disregarded altogether.

One of the activities we’ve been involved in recently, was an impact evaluation of World YWCA’s initiative ‘Promoting the realization of the right to health for young women and girls’.

Combining several inclusive and participatory methods such as the Most Significant Change technique and Photovoice, our team was able to meaningfully engage the program beneficiaries in the evaluation process. We collectively reflected on the impact of the program and its effectiveness in disrupting prevailing cultural narratives prohibiting women and girls from knowing, owning, and exercising their rights.

On the 1st of December, the world commemorates World AIDS Day. This year, its “Equalize” slogan calls that same world into action: it prompts us to tackle the inequalities which perpetuate the AIDS pandemic – which are not inevitable (UN 2022). We wholeheartedly join this call.

Our IMPACT team works towards a more inclusive world for those living with and affected by HIV through operational research, M&E, and capacity building activities. It is one of our key areas of expertise.

One of the projects we have been involved in, is PITCH – a five-year (2016-2020) advocacy-based program focusing on the capacity building of local CSOs to advocate for equal rights and access to services for key populations in countries that are highly affected by HIV.

Using innovative evaluation methods, such as stories of change and Outcome Harvesting, our team was responsible for the end term evaluation of the program. We provided a critical analysis of the program’s contribution to evidence-based changes in relation to its goals and advocacy strategies.

Today commemorates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

ResultsinHealth is committed to making a solid contribution to the eradication of Violence against Women & Girls (VAWG). Through our M&E activities, we have been involved in various exciting & innovative projects that focus on strengthening the autonomy of women and girls, supporting them in securing their health and rights.

Using participatory and storytelling techniques, we aim to ensure the voices of the women and girls targeted by such initiatives are brought to the forefront and are at the core of program development.

Our team recently completed an evaluation of a project implemented by the Global Fund for Women, which aimed to develop working and living conditions where women are free from sexual harassment and violence. We collected stories of change among women garment workers, gathering insights into whether the project had been successful in empowering them to secure their workplace rights.

“Dignity For All in Practice”

This year’s theme of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty directs our attention to the fact that many people living in persistent poverty experience their dignity being denied and disrespected. Inequalities of opportunities and income are sharply on the rise and, each year, the gap between the rich and poor gets even wider (source: UN).

ResultinHealth’s participatory approach aims to increase people’s autonomy and feeling of dignity by ensuring their voices are heard and respected throughout research and evaluation activities.

Through our operational research activities, we have been involved in initiatives focusing on the eradication of poverty, covering topics such as the social inclusion of People With Disabilities (PWD) and improving the health of mothers and children through Conditional Cash Transfer (CTT) programs.

Forests for a Just Future: providing baseline values & targets

19 August 2022

ResultsinHealth recently finalised the baseline report for the “Forests for a Just Future” project, implemented by the Green Livelihoods Alliance. The “Forests for a Just Future” programme aims to ensure that tropical forests and forest landscapes are sustainably and inclusively governed to mitigate and adapt to climate change, support human rights, and safeguard local livelihoods.

Taking an inclusive and participatory approach, we worked closely with the client to ensure a co-creation process throughout all levels of the baseline. The baseline tools were developed in collaboration with the GLA and shared with project partners for their input on feasibility and appropriateness.  Furthermore, the ResultsinHealth team – remotely – trained local data collectors, ensuring everyone was able and motivated to use the tools and contribute to the baseline.

Combining this interactive approach to tool design and data collection with high quality data analysis, we provided our client with the baseline values and targets that will be used as reference to track progress throughout the programme.

ResultsinHealth proudly supports World Refugee Day, celebrated each year on June 20. We are and have been involved in various projects and activities focusing on refugees and diaspora communities. Ensuring a participatory, inclusive approach in such activities is our primary goal, tapping into the knowledge, voices and strength of the people involved.

We are currently providing technical assistance and M&E services for a project focusing on the unique position held by Afghan diaspora communities. These communities have the potential to facilitate change, respond to emergencies, and promote peace and development in their country of origin.

The aim of the project, implemented by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), is to support members of the Afghan diaspora in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands to engage with migrants and refugees in a way that reduces protection risks

The “WASH First - Scaling up WASH SDG efforts: The first line of defence against COVID-19” was seen as an emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic in at-risk countries. By promoting hygiene awareness and improving access to safe and clean water, toilets and washing facilities, it mainly focused its efforts on those furthest behind, especially women and girls.

The programme was implemented by the Netherlands WASH SDG consortium, coordinated by Simavi, aiming to contribute to COVID-19 prevention efforts by reaching almost 5.5 million people in six countries: Ethiopia, Indonesia, Uganda (countries from the existing WASH SDG programme) and Kenya, Mozambique, and Rwanda.

Collaborating with national consultants in all six countries, RiH conducted an endline evaluation. Combining various methods – such as observations, Key Informant Interviews, the collection of Stories of Change – helped the team provide the consortium and their partners with an independent comprehensive review of the WASH First programme outputs and achievements from start (September 2020) to finish (November 2021).

Using a Rapid Knowledge Translation Approach for Better Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

13 May 2022

To reduce SRHR-related morbidity and mortality - and ensuring access to rights - it is of great importance to effectively translate knowledge into policy and practice.

SRHR knowledge platforms can play a key role in this translation: helping to prioritize relevant issues, mapping knowledge gaps, and developing evidence-based policy and practice.

To tap into this potential and to contribute to the improvement of SRHR, a collaborative rapid improvement model for knowledge translation was designed and implemented by several SRHR platforms in Bangladesh, Burundi, Indonesia and Jordan.

Together with colleagues from ShareNet International, Aryanti Radyowijati - Director of ResultsinHealth - has been involved in the writing of an article discussing the approach and achievements of this Rapid Knowledge Translation Approach.

The article has recently been published by the Global Health: Science and Practice journal, and can be found here: https://www.ghspjournal.org/content/early/2022/04/05/GHSP-D-21-00461

World Malaria Day: Advance Equity. Build Resilience. End Malaria.

25 April 2022

Malaria is holding back economies, communities, and families from achieving their potential. It's women and particularly children who bear the brunt of this impact.

This year’s World Malaria Day theme is: ‘Advance Equity. Build Resilience. End Malaria.’ It follows the recent publication of the World Malaria Report which shows that COVID-19 disruptions led to an increase of malaria cases and deaths.

Though much good work is being done by governments, health workers and partners in endemic countries, the human toll of this disease continues to be unacceptable and unjust. A child dies from malaria almost every minute, despite it being a treatable and preventable disease, with 80% of annual malaria deaths being amongst African children under five.

Today, on World Malaria Day, ResultsinHealth joins the malaria community calling for an urgent need for action, and targeted scale up of existing and new tools, such as the RTS,S vaccine and next generation mosquito nets, more data-led strategies and investment in transformative tools.

This year’s @TheGlobalFund 7th Replenishment ask for at least $18bn, is how we #EndMalaria. It will make the difference between winning 🏆, or losing📉 this fight to #EndMalaria within a generation 🦟🚫#FightForWhatCounts

08 April 2022

Marginalized and hard to reach populations, such as the poor, youth, and people living with disabilities, often experience significant difficulties in accessing quality integrated and inclusive family planning and SRHR services.

A program aiming to address this gap, the Women’s Integrated Sexual Health, or WISH, program, was implemented from 2018-2021. As part of the consortium implementing Lot2 (WISH2ACTION) of the WISH program, Humanity & Inclusion (HI) supported its consortium partners in ensuring SRHR services were actively made inclusive to people with disabilities.

ResultsinHealth conducted the end-line evaluation of HI’s activities in two countries - Uganda and South Sudan - to assess (the sustainability of) the changes brought about by the intervention and the inclusivity of SRHR programming.

Due to the complex nature of the program and the challenges of COVID-19, the team adopted a mixed method approach, considering both intended and unintended outcomes. Using inclusive and participative methods such as Focus Group Discussions and the collection of Stories of Change, the evaluation aimed to create ownership and facilitate a dialogue of learning.

We worked on the evaluation with much dedication and are proud to have received positive feedback from our contact at Humanity & Inclusion:
“It is with much enthusiasm that I recommend RiH for projects requiring monitoring, evaluation and learning expertise. In their task execution, RiH exhibited strong commitment and hard work to the assignment, adhered to the timelines and was flexible during data collection in COVID-19 pandemic period as well as in addressing feedback from HI”.

Combining participatory storytelling techniques to vocalize and visualize project impact.

In June of this year, RiH carried out the end-term impact evaluation of World YWCA’s intiative ‘Promoting the realization of the right to health for young women and girls’, funded by the Finland Government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

One of the main purposes of the evaluation was to highlight the experiences of the ‘young women leads’ who took part in the program and served as agents of change by shaping new narratives on SRHR and mental health.

After collecting stories of change (using aspect sof the Most Significant Change (MSC) technique) among the young women, these stories were then used as the starting point of  a Photovoice workshop, resulting in ‘photo-stories of change’.

In combining these methods, our team was able to meaninfully engage the programme beneficiaries in the evaluation process, by collectively reflecting on the impact of the program and the effectiveness of disrupting prevailing narratives. Furthermore, we were able to identify and visualize the ‘significant changes’ experienced since becoming involved in the program.

“You can see the #Not In My Name in the back, advocating against GBV. It is the silent cry for our sisters, we are standing in solidarity with them. We are standing in a window depicting ourselves as prisoners. But we re-fuse to be bullied, to be violated. We are standing in solidarity to say: not in my name, no to GBV. Before the project started these women were not prepared to advocate in this a way”.

New project | Collecting stories of change among women garment workers

28 September 2021

ResultsinHealth is conducting the External Evaluation of Global Fund for Women’s initiative to end Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the Garment Industry in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, and Vietnam.

From 2016-2021, Global Fund for Women, together with Laudes Foundation, Gender at Work, and NoVo, have been implementing this initiative to develop working and living environments for women garment workers where they are free from both sexual harassment and sexual violence. The project aims to empower these women to secure their workplace rights.

Using a mixed method approach, guided by the principle to meaningfully engage program participants in the evaluation, RiH will be documenting the program’s successes, challenges and lessons learned, offering recommendations that can be used to inform future initiatives.

One key aspect of RiH’s evaluation approach for this assignment, is to collect stories of change among the program participants – women garment workers – and other relevant stakeholders. This ensures the inclusion of their voices in the evaluation, shedding light on the actual changes that occurred in their lives due to project activities. Furthermore, gathering stories among this group helps identify what (did not) work(ed), and why, and potential (unexpected) secondary outcomes.

Photovoice in M&E activities

05 August 2021

RiH uses innovative participatory methods in their M&E activities. Photovoice, through visual storytelling, provides us with the opportunity to capture experiences, changes and impact brought about by programs.

The end of 2019 concluded the implementation of the ‘La League’ program, implemented by Plan International Netherlands, in collaboration with the Johan Cruyff Foundation and the Women Win initiative. The pilot program was implemented in the Boaco and Chinandega departments of Nicaragua and took a ‘sports for development’ approach by using football to contribute to the empowerment of adolescent girls and young women.

ResultsinHealth was responsible for the final evaluation and used Photovoice to assess the effects of the intervention as experienced by the girls that participated in the program. Photovoice was chosen to meaningfully involve the girls in the evaluation process, giving them the opportunity to express themselves and promote critical dialogue, providing a chance to empower them further.

Girls – aged 15-19 – attended a Photovoice workshop to collectively reflect on their experiences since joining the La League Project through pictures. They discussed the changes that happened within themselves and changes they observed in their families and communities. The method helped reveal changes that occurred in existing social and gender norms, such as gender roles, perceptions of girls, and issues of gender inequality.

“Society told us that only women could do house chores, but now we realize that men can do them too. A real man for me is someone who is not ashamed of doing these jobs because he feels confident enough and is not bothered by what others may think. It's been the same in my house with my brother and my dad; […] they used to think for a long time that only women could do house chores. Now they've learnt things that have changed their minds. If in a given moment my mom, sister or I are busy they do the chores because now they can see we are equal”.

More information about the project and RiH’s approach to participatory M&E can be found on our website.
